The Social Security Corporation (SSC) disclosed that approximately 109,000 women got maternity benefits last year, which amounts to a total of JOD12.393 million, representing a five percent increase in comparison to 2020.
The SSC explained that women who had subscribed are entitled to an allowance equivalent to her last salary from the start of her maternity leave, for the duration of her absence from work and in accordance with the period prescribed in the applicable labor law, which is currently set at ten weeks.
This allowance is paid lump sum after the issuance of the birth certificate, provided that each birth is preceded by a period of subscription to the corporation through her job at a private establishment for a period of no less than six consecutive months. In unfortunate cases of stillbirth, a death certificate of the fetus must be provided, according to the SSC.
The corporation said the application of maternity benefits aims to ensure protection and safety for women working in the private sector, motivate employers to hire female employees and not to let them them go if they get married or are entitled to a paid maternity leave.
