One of the leading Chinese consumer groups has accused KFC China of encouraging food waste and called for a boycott of the meal promotion, as reported by the BBC.

Accrodfing to the state-affiliated China Consumers Association (CCA), the promotion has KFC customers overspending for the toys included in the promotion. The offer, which was launched last week in celebration of KFC’s 35th anniversary of opening their first branch in mainland China, is in collaboration with a local toy maker, Pop Mart, famous for mystery boxes.

The issue is that customers are buying the meals that come with limited edition Dimoo dolls, not to eat the food but to get the toy.

KFC “used limited-edition blind box sales to induce and condone consumers’ irrational and excessive purchase of meal sets, which goes against public order, good customs and the spirit of the law.”

– CCA Statement

According to the statement one customer spent the equivalent of USD1,649 to purchase more than 100 meals at once. A significant amount of the meals purchased where thrown out as is.
